The evangelicals always knew he was a minister, so why is he attracting support all of a sudden?

Because all the other candidates only care about evangelical votes, not the people or the message.

The evangelicals have gotten it into their closed-minded, ignorant skulls that LDS equals satanism, so they're supporting Mike over Mitt. The rest of us conservatives who aren't conservative in name only and guided by some kind of arcane religious ideology are interested in Huckabee because he's the only one saying he'll support a STOP to illegal immigration, a STOP to the anti-gun whiners, a STOP to this idea that higher taxes mean more revenue and a STOP to the idea that the Democrats can somehow fix what the Republicans have "broken."

Fiscal responsibility, Huckabee seems to be the only candidate that wants to run on less spending. I think the democrats could really make this an issue but they don't seem interested, and Huckabee along with many hard lined republicans want the spending to stop.

He is an amiable fool, and a supporter of illegal immigration. The reason he is getting so much support now is that many religious Conservatives have abandoned Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney in favor of the only GOP candidate who is and has been, one of them. I predict that his support will decrease once his opponents start slinging the mud in his direction.

He would be an awful candidate for the GOP to choose, as his conservative, fundamentalist Christian views turn off most moderates and almost all liberals.

I think most Fred Thompson supporters are going to him as a "conservative" alternative to Giuliani and McCain who are more moderate for Republicans. Huckabee governed more moderately than conservatively when governor.
