ONLY 1 gift to open on Christmas Eve .. and the MOM in the family would choose that gift.

I did this with my children from the time they were born ... and I also would do the 'round the family -- youngest first' open ONLY one present at a time .. .write down what you received (and who it was from) ... so that the JOY of seeing each present opened, its happiness would be enjoyed by all present (and ... it teaches the children patience).

Finally ... I always had an artificial tree -- and yes, the lower branches were dedicated to the Little ones -- where they could design a paper or soft ornament, and yes, hang it from these branches. This way .. the littlest ones would be able to help decorate the tree too .. and that was always fun! (Hey, when BOTH my children were toddlers -- only the bottom 25% of the tree had ornaments -- but that was OK -- they made them, they liked it that they got to "Decorate" the tree .. and it looked FINE to me!)

We have a big to-do on Xmas Eve more so on the Day of Christmas. It included hor-deauves, music and movies and just generally family togetherness. I really treasure those moments as a child and I'm happy to bring that to my kids who are 3 & 6.

Airing of grievances, feats of strength, you know, the usual holiday stuff...
