I bought a new laptop last year and there are a couple different options for vista to temporarily put your computer in standby. I just wonder which is better for my computer in different situations. Options again are Standby, Hibernate, and Shutdown.

standby is used when you want to power down your computer and keep your programs active so when you turn it back on, everything is the way you left it. The laptop must still be powered.

Hibernate does the same thing, EXCEPT, you do not have to keep power on to the computer. When you restart, everything you had will be there.

Shutdown just shuts the system down completely and you start fresh after restart....

If you are not going to use it for a while, shut it down....I use hibernate myself especially when going from work to home or vice versa....

Standby is good when you are going to lunch or not going to use the computer for a couple of hours....

We shut down nightly. Most important, for both money and earth, save power. No harm to the computer. Purge memory and temporary ongoing working files.

Yes, even computers need rest :) Always power down your computers when they are not in use for long periods of time. And laptops WILL overheat!
