My opinion is no, I live in a depressed rural area where a great deal of the population is at or below the poverty line. The middle school that my daughter goes too had a fundraiser which if the children paid $5 they could wear their normal clothes for a day instead of the uniforms. This seemed very unfair because a great deal of the families barely have food in their counters and on top of that have to buy new uniforms each year. I believe there are better ways to fundraise and this practice singles out the children who cannot afford $5 for this benefit. Also the students were told that if they wore their regular clothes without paying they would be suspended. What do you think?

I think the suspension option is quite harsh. And the $5.00 fee is high if you're in a depressed area (or any area for that matter). I've seen this sort of fundraiser before and the most they've charge each student is $1.00, though often it's less. On the face of it, it sounds like a good idea -- but not when you consider the economic status of your area. The school should be more in touch with what's going on around them in regards to their students (and their families) and come up with a better plan for a fundraiser. If it were me, I probably would've complained to the office or principal -- not argumentatively, but in a way that let them understand they have no idea what a hardship many of their students are going through and that to plan such a fundraiser where many students cannot participate due to the low-income situation of their household is unfair. Ask them that in the future they either lower the amount for each student to less than $1.00 (if that seems fair to you) OR to not have that type of fundraiser at all. You might want to check with other parents too -- see if you can gain support on this. Then you can approach the principal together either by letter/petition that you all sign or in person.

We do it but we call them crazy days and we only charge $.50 to wear them. $5 is a bit extreme.

Of course I would rather have school uniforms at our school. Instead our superintendent has gone off the deep end with the dress code. One parent said,"It's like he picked up the whole town and moved us to Cuba without us knowing it." They make it up as they go along. They even tried to make my son take off his Jesus never strikes out shirt. I was mad to say the least. Then at the Veteran's day program, my son had on his dad's Navy sweatshirt (dad served 5 yrs in the Navy) and they made him take that off because the sweatshirt had a hood. So I would say just be glad your not dealing with Fidel Castro the superintendent.
