That's called, incorrectly, a barrell organ. Actually the instrument has a long history. When it was first conceived it was quite small. You turned a handle and it sounded a bit lkike a music box. It was used by fashionable ladies to teach birds songs, and at that time was called the Serinette.

The version most of us know was originally used in Germany by street performers, and was made a a company called Werklmann, so it was often called that. Also there was the similar kinderflutenpipe.

The same principle, but highly mechanized, became the circus calliope.

Most folks refer to it as a street organ.

Its called a barrel organ as per the Wiki entry below. I had thought it was a hurdy gurdy but I see that is more violin-like so I researched a little bit further.

I am thinking "music box." Sometimes, they have snow globes on top of them. Other times, ballerinas, etc. Usually, you turn a little thumb screw to make them play.

Music Box -- Produces music by means of pins on a revolving cylinder that strike the tuned teeth of a comb-like metal plate.

Edit: J'adore le petit prince! Le livre est très mignon.
