Ok, let me cover all the bases...

The Maltese Falcon
City Lights (Charlie Chaplin, silent film, sweet tear-jerker)
North By Northwest
King Kong
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Citizen Kane
A Christmas Carol (black & white Christmas classic w/Allistair Syms as Scrooge)
It's a Wonderful Life (Christmas must-see -- but, also one of the Top 5 movies ever made, period)
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (22-mins. of 60's greatness)
Singing in the Rain (fun, classic musical)
On The Town (classic stars, musical)
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Marilyn, 50's chick flick)
Alien
Jaws
Psycho
An American Werewolf in London (Horror/comedy)
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (classic send-up)
Young Frankenstein (comedy)
The Producers (comedy)
Blazing Saddles (comedy)
Jason and The Argonauts (for a teen boy, no movie ever made keep attention better.. w/o boobs or fart jokes)
The Wild Ones (Brando)
The Wild Bunch (western)
High Noon (western)
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs
Toy Story
Ratatouille (excellent)
The Godfather I (and II)
Raging Bull
There's Something About Mary (best of today's type of comedy)
The Waterboy (Adam Sandler, football, young humor)

You can't really go wrong, with Oscar winners... even obscure titles from years ago (and across the many categories). And anything that's recommended, from any other era or genre -- from Easy Rider to The Jazz Singer to Jurassic Park to The African Queen to My Cousin Vinny -- that sounds good to you...
