I think that would be a very thoughtful gift. There is a point of equilibrium with beards that is difficult to maintain and a trimmer would be perfect.

Beard trimmer. The guard on it can be removed so that it can be used as a shaver as well, so that's kind of 2 for the price of one.

A manual razor comes in direct contact with your skin which means it can cut closer than any electric shaver ever could. Power shavers have a thin cap on the head which prevents the rotating blades from coming into contact with your skin. This prevents an electric shaver from ever getting as close as a manual razor would. This does come at a price though. Because manual razors actually drag across your skin you can easily damage your skin or even cut yourself. An electric shaver completely eliminates the risk of damaging your skin while shaving.

A beard trimmer is a great tool. I had one a loved it. I had it until my 4 year old broke it.

The best kind I found is a Norelco, rechargeable with multiple guards.

I have very thick hair and a trimmer makes all the difference.

You can get him a combo shaver/trimmer. They come with adjustable guards to control length or you can remove it and use it as a shaver.
