For those who always claim San Antonio is hot, hotter, and more hot, I would pity them if they moved to the desert Southwest. I can remember living in other places in the US and driving home at 110 degrees or hotter. Sometimes it registered hotter, but may not have been above that at the official temp recording. And I was in Central America at 120 degrees and above.
The average high temperature in July is 94-95 degrees. Not significantly hotter than most of the southern cities, and actually not significantly hotter than most of the east coast.
The humidity is lower than Florida in San Antonio, so the temps at 95 will not seem as hot to someone used to Tampa in the summer. Most of the year the highs are in the high 70s to low 80s. The average low in January is 39 degrees, and though there will be an occasional night when the temperature hits freezing in the winter it is actually rare. Snow is seen in San Antonio about every 7 - 10 years, and usually last no more than 2-3 days. Last winter we had a period of about 5 days when the temperature went below freezing and stayed, and we had ice all over the city and power failures, but again that was an extremely rare event. North of the city, in the Hill Country areas there is often more of the colder temperatures, but the costal winds usually keep those temperatures away from the city.
The cost of living in the city of San Antonio is moderate on the comparison with the US as a whole, but housing is very inexpensive, and the cost of living is very favorable with most large/populated states. To evaluate this, I compared an occupation, I had looked up for another project. In Tampa the occupation averages a salary of $66,000 per year. The national average for the position is $69,500 per year. In San Antonio the average salary for that position, is $73, 000 per year. However a salary comparison showed that to equal the $66,000 made in Tampa, a person would need to make $63,000 a year to have the same standard of living if they were in San Antonio. So the cost of living is similar, but the salaries are a little better in some occupations, probably a little worse in others.
As far as the job market, it would, of course, depend on the occupation. However, in general, as San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US and Tampa is the 55th largest city in the US, it would be realistic to assume, there would be more employers, and therefore potentially more job positions.
San Antonio is a wonderful city, and though we have seen it grow a significant amount over the years, it still has a small city feel in many ways.
I hope you will enjoy our city, and be happy you made it your new home.
Welcome to San Antonio.

The cost of living is very affordable. However, we are a tourist type city and a lot of the jobs here are service oriented so they might not be as high wages as elsewhere.
You can live in a beautiful new home close to everything with great square footage at about $900. and up. Many rentals available due to an influx of out of state investors.
Weather is hot, hotter and even more hot. Yesterday we had the A/C on and today it was cold and wet! Its a great city with friendly people and a great basketball team!!
I have to disagree with Sarge about the "south side" being the bad part of town. Nice areas just south of downtown with friendly people and nice established neighborhoods.

Let's break it down:
WEATHER: Hot and humid for the most part, averages 40 inches of rain a year and usually gets all that rain in the span of about 2 days (BIG problems with flash flooding). Can get cold in winter -- not as cold as Tampa, but not that much warmer either.
COST OF LIVING: Depends on where you live. As with any big city, they have very nice and very expensive areas and very trashy and very inexpensive areas, and of course they have a lot of areas in between. North side is nicer, south side is the bad side of town, and there are several cities surrounding San Antonio that are nice (Converse and Universal City are nicer in terms of housing, crime, schools, parks, etc.) Gas is generally less expensive in Texas than Florida, groceries are about the same, and utilities are about on par with Florida.
JOB MARKET: Again, it all depends on what you do for a living. The job market isn't exactly booming, but they're not in a rut like many manufacturing states -- Michigan comes to mind. San Antonio is a military town (three Air Force bases and two Army posts), and many people who live there work as civilian employees or contractors for the Department of Defense. Most of the other jobs are blue-collar, so white-collar positions in San Antonio are fiercely competed for.
All in all, I enjoyed the three years I spent stationed there. Nice city, nice people for the most part (although you have to watch out for discrimination against whites by Mexican-Americans -- they make up 75% of the population there), plenty to see and do, all the conveniences of a major city, and you shouldn't have a problem with crime or gangs as long as you know which parts of town to stay out of.
