Thats the East vs West, we always try and heal symptoms not the problems. It definately is time, but the kazillions of dollars made off of drugs and people's misery are far too tempting for some.

"I Do". A right question at the right time. Teen agers are having a serious problems. They get tensed easily, stressed easily and depressed very easily. Parents have no time to look into the psychological aspect of it. Medicines are the first choice.
There was a time when the children were educated intellectually and emotionally. The mind used to get strengthened. They were never Timid and short tempered. Lot of attention was there on each child by the family members. Now there is no Family. Even the teachers are reserved to look into the psychological development of a child. They remain non- commitant. The system has to change. The political scenario has to change. If it does not change today, it will be too late tomorrow; for, we will see the future citizens of tomorrow temperamental and aggressive resulting in fights, shoots and kills.....

Long overdue. We want to diagnose a problem away with better life through chemistry instead of finding the root problems. Which it is only natural that teenagers moving into adulthood have systematic depression. That is why the suicide rate has always been higher for that group. The pressures of being a teen or young adult trying to find their own identity and break away from their parents is intense. I helped my two daughters through this difficult time by being patient, listening, keeping a structured lifestyle and supporting them when they disagreed with my view of the world. In short, I let them develop into their own selves naturally, so that they would have high self esteem and content with themselves, and have two well adjusted and happy daughters.

It's WAY past time.
Healthcare in the US is not about curing anything. It's about TREATING SYMPTOMS so you have to keep going back and back and back. There is no PROFIT in curing depression, there is, however, ENORMOUS profit in keeping a kid constantly drugged (for whatever reason).
A very close friend of mine's daughter is a school nurse at a public school here in Tempe AZ. She related to her mom (my friend) how every morning, she has a LINE of kids (now we are talking 8 and 9 year old kids) outside her door, waiting to get their daily Ritalyn or Prozac or whatever drug is most popular with the drug companies this month. it's a sad state of affairs when you can't get through a day in class without being stoned on some prescription medication.

40-50 years ago, Kids didn't have depression, they had "angst" in the changing from grade school to high school to college or work. They dealt with it! Those are your parents...not drugged out through prescription anti-depressants. We, as a society (particularly the medical profession) has a tendency to seek "Instant Solutions" as well as "Instant Gratification"...we don't find out and treat the cause, we deal with symptoms by drugging people.
A.D.H.D. (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) didn't exist--might this be a function of all the drugs we get in the food we eat--growth hormones, anti-spoiling additives like BHA and BHT--the fact that our produce is artificially brought to the appearance of ripeness?
Perhaps we out to get most of the chemicals out of our foods and see what that does in relation to ADHD, Depression and the other "psychiatric" problems in our society.

The real solution?!?
Why to do that you would have to end consumerism.
Consumerism leads to poverty, it leads to bullying and peer pressure, it leads to crime (especially street crime), and above all, it causes intense greed. Most of these things effect teenagers far more frequently than anyone else.
It also creates a whole load of stupid, blind and brainwashed spendaholics, who are more than willing to go out and work a 60 hour week to earn enough to pay for the trash they buy... which in turn creates millions in taxable earnings, and spending... and is one less person out and about paying attention to REAL things to worry about.
Without huge figures in modern culture and key government officials banding together to fight the lesser known issues that effect our kids (such as the peer pressure caused by advertising for example), I'm afraid depression in teenagers is an unfortunate but inevitable by-product.

I hadn't thought about that ?
Maybe I never grabbed a gun and shot a bunch of people because Mom & Dad spanked me as a kid !
If no other effect is noted then that sort of made it worth it, at least for the would-be victims of my wrath(if I ever developed it, that is).
Oh well my case is insignificant becasuse there are for sure far more people who did not do the shooting spree/suicide thing than those who did-----------now I wonder these shooters get spanked as kids ?

It's time for the Government to butt out of family. Kids who were spanked as a punishment for disrespect and doing bad things, have more of an appreciation for consequences, thus causing the person to become respectful and productive. Being productive leads to success and success leads to contentment. Good Bye Depression. A bad day for unspanked kids now days is having their WII taken away for 24 hours.

you trying to put the multi million pound drug companies out of buisness. no just kidding
kids are depressed because they all sit infront of tv's playing mindless games all day or on the pc talking to their friends instead of getting of their *** and meeting them, Our bodies are designed to be used, get the kids more active and more fresh air and they will soon feel better

I think its crazy for all illnesses to be treated this way! Covering up or stopping symtoms is not a cure-sometimes it helps and a combo of pills,health,excercise-clean air and food I think would be better-
