Well, IF the Red Sox got Santana, they would of course lose Ellsburry putting Crisp back in center. I excpect Ortiz's power numbers to rise back up to which they were in th 04-06 seasons, and Manny wont be injured hopefully and could hit 40+ home runs. Mike Lowell hasn't been consistent through his career as he could be. He'll still hit 100+ RBIs with a .290-like average. Pedroia, will not do as well this season, but won't do worse by a whole lot. Youkillis will hit 25+ home runs and hit over .300. Lugo, Crisp, and Drew are the only question marks I see on the team. They would probably be a team that scores 950+ runs this season. The pitching rotation would look like Johan Santana, Josh Beckett, Dice-K, Curt Schilling, and Tim Wakefield. All of them had good seasons ERA wise. If they only give up 4-5 runs a game, Beckett and Santana will likely each win 20+ games. If Dice-K proves that his first season was just a slump season, he too could win 20+ games. And Schilling could win 10+ and Wakefield 15+. Thats a possible 85 wins in the rotation. And they have a great bullpen. But is 120 reachable? Maybe. But for this to happen, the Red Sox will ned to stay relatively healthy and match or exceed last year. So I do not personally think the Red Sox will win that many games, but WILL win at least 100. This is all of course, if the get Santana, which seems unlikely to this point. But the Twins are waiting it out and the Red Sox could get him.

If you look back to the last big winner we had, the1998 Yankees, the Devil Rays were rotting in their first season, the Red Sox, Orioles and Blue Jays were rather weak. The Yankees "only" won 114 games that year
I'd love to see 120, but I don't see the Sox as dominant as the Yankees were in 1998.
They'd have to have four guys with 20 wins, which hasn't been done since the '66 Orioles.
As long as everything goes well, Beckett and Santana could get 22 or 23 each. Dice-K could pull in 18 or so. I wouldn't expect more than 15 from Schilling and Wakefield.
That would be 94 wins, leaving 26 for the bullpen to rake in. Tito tries to protect the bullpen the best he can. I think he would rather concede a few losses than burn out the bullpen.
To get close to that, they would need to lose Schilling and Wake for some younger guns. Wakefield is valuable because he chews up innings and gives the pen a rest. Schilling is a great locker room presence. Like him or not, he makes a difference.

If they get Santana, I'd give them about a 0.5% chance of winning 120 games. They're a very good team and would be even better with Santana, but 120 games? They would not only need to stay completely healthy and get career years from pretty much everyone (including the 40-year-old Schilling), but they'd also need every break to fall their way.
So it sounds like Schilling has said another dumb thing. How surprising!

I would much rather Schilling be right about this than he was with his presidential prediction in 2004, however, a big part of the 'if' is about Schilling, a 40 year old winning 75% of his games.
While I say this rather tongue in cheek, please remember that some fans were predicting 125 wins for a team when Randy Johnson joined them in 2005.
They were 30 wins short.

no, the sox dont have enough, even with santana, to win that many, santana will probably get 15 or 16 wins them, though its possible he will falter badly in boston like edgar renteria did, however even if he does just fine, they wont win that many, ortiz and ramirez are older now and more beat up, the angels and tigers have improved as teams and the indians showned last year they are a really good team, the sox will easily win the east, with or without santana, but they wont completely dominate and i dont even think theyll win the AL pennant, with or without santana

I'm not saying this just because I like New York, but I think it would be too hard to win 120 games when you have to play in the AL East with this year's Yankees and Blue Jays.

120 is not going to happen, they won 96 last year; that means adding Santana, and subtracting Ellsbury and Lester will equate to 24 more wins? I can't see that. 105 max (nothing to sneeze at, mind you.)
