No no no on the gift card. Most of those are never used so you're just donating to the business you choose.
A charitable donation to a place you know they like would be delightful - this can be touchy unless you know their choices.
Take them out to their favorite restaurant for a lovely dinner or take them to a play. If they have a garage that they continuously put off organizing get them a storage organization system and do it for them. If they have a yard or garden give them x hours of gardening work.
And next year, keep a small notebook with you so that anytime someone says I'd like "whatever" you can make a note and then your Christmas shopping is a snap.

Anyone who says they don't want anything probably means just the opposite. I usually take it as "I don't care what you get me, but I'll be a little hurt if I don't get anything".

I second the gift card idea for someone you're not too close to. If it's a family member, you might want to think of something more personal.

Holiday socks...that's as close as you can get without giving nothing! I know what you mean, they're important to you...so you want them to know it.
At the very least, you both will get a chuckle out of it.

Side note: My son just found one of his "joke" stocking stuffers that I bought at the drug store. Boxers with penguins all over them, crayola green. When what to my wondering ears should I hear? "Oh, my god, I love them. I'm wearing them to school tomorrow!"

Who knew I had such good taste! I can't wait til he sees the black ones with Merry Christmas written all over them in probably 18 languages--will that make his day or what!

They asked you for a reason, dont buy them anything. If you want to do something, get them a card. Maybe they just prefer you spend your money on someone or something else. Honor the request.

Either don't get them anything, because it will make it awkward if they dont get you something. Or take them out for a nice lunch. And if this is a lover, make a homemade coupon book.

Give em a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Tell them you insist they except it as your Christmas gift as they didn't want anything. And then when they really think you didn't get them a gift, surprise them by pulling out a small present.

Ask them if they want to go in with you on adopting an angel from the Salvation Army Angel Tree or giving to Toys for Tots as a gift to each other.

Nothing. Maybe they don't want anything because they can't afford to get you something or don't want to be bothered with trying to figure out what. Respect their request as you will only make them feel bad if you give them something & they don't have anything for you.

People say that but really they do want something that you cant get. I would say get them at least a card to show that you are thinking about them or take them out to a favorite place they always liked.

Maybe they don't want material things. Perhaps they would just like to spend time with you. Take them to the movies and you pay, or out for a meal and you pay. Or out to the mall and buy them something silly that saw while shopping.
