My wife is a psychologist and most that she has run into are actually atheist. However, it is extremely important for a psychologist, especially in a big city, to be very knowledgeable about other religions and cultures so that they can apply this knowledge while working with people from all backgrounds.

Because religion is something that is ingrained in us. As such, as we mature, we build upon our religion and its theologies and traditions. Those things need to be considered by a psychologist when dealing with a patient for a variety of reasons. For example, Catholics and Jews kid about "guilt" issues, but they're very real. Sin is different for different faiths, so understanding that is important in helping to solve patients' mental issues.

Perhaps because whether or not a person believes says a lot about them. There's no factual basis for the existence of god, so one must take it on faith. One could argue that believers are not very grounded in reality. On the other hand, those who are adamant and defiant about being atheists tend to be anti-authoritarian.

I would suggest that no-one can really "know" one way or another and so we are all agnostics of one kind or another.
