Anyone who mistreats you should raise a red flag. A relationship should be based on mutual respect and love. If a person says or does things to his partner but does not want the same treatment, he is not respecting his partner and a red flag is raised. He probably thinks he is superior and expects different treatment. This is certainly true in many cultures, where women are second class citizens. Arab countries are like that, girls don't even get the same education as boys, and from early on they are considered lower than males. It is changing slowly, but not fast enough.

That is a complicated question. The control person can use passive (If you love me you will...) or aggressive control methods ( I want you to.....or else...). And, they do feel that the world should listen to and abide by their rules. If you want to discuss this further, e-mail me and we will go for it. (Excellent question!)
