Snow is formed only when it is cold enough and formed when precipitation in or below a cloud crystallizes and falls to the ground. Snow is formed from many crystals and is almost always shaped in a six dendrite formation as it grows in size.
Interesting facts about snow:
1) Unpacked snow is 90% air (It makes it a great insulator for plant growth)
2) Snow flakes are unique. They are irregular crystals because they grow at different rates in the atmosphere depending on moisture, winds, and temperature!

1. No two snowflakes are the same.
For the second one, maybe do something on the damages snow causes every year. Deaths, home damages, power outages. I was in a blizzard in Buffalo, in October 2006, I had no power for a week.
Snow is the accumulation of water vapor in the atmosphere of the Earth. The vapor builds up in clouds and eventually falls to the Earth. Instead of it melting as it gets closer to teh ground and becoming rain, the vapor remains frozen as it falls to the ground.
Maybe make the intro sound something like
Both beautiful and deadly, snow has plagued and enchanted man. Whether it be the wonder of watching the first snowfall, or the twinkling candle light of a blackout, (and go on from there)
try and mention a couple facts, and briefly state what you are going to explain in your essay.

Snowflakes are ice crystals formed in a cloud, which fall to the ground when the air is below freezing.
Snow helps insulate the world from sub-zero freezing. Snow appears white but it is actually reflecting all color to make it appear white.
I wrote an article on snow - read it here:

If ice crystals are present in a cloud, they bond together until large enough to fall. While falling they either remain frozen reaching the ground as snow,or melt, reaching the ground as rain.
So,snow is a solid precipitation which occurs in a variety of minute ice crystals at temperature well BELOW zero degree celcius but as larger snow flakes at temperatures NEAR zero degree celcius.
Snow flakes consist of hexagonal or six-pointed ice crystals. In very cold air, several crystals may clump together to form flakes that are coloumnar or needle-shaped.
Snow avalanches occur on slopes of 30 -60 degree.Snow breaks free from the underlying surface and crashes downslope at speeds of 200 Km/hour.
'Granular snow' consists of opaque grains, rather flattened in shape and generally less than one mm in diameter.

Same way rain happens, moisture in the atmosphere clings to particles of dust and then falls, the only difference is snow freezes. In between you have sleet.
I think the obvious "fact" is that no two snowflakes are the same.
