The word "solve" suggests that there should be an equation which , in turn , requires an = sign.
In this case, should read as:-
Simplify the following expression:-
4a - 2b - 6a + 8b = 6b - 2a

Actually, you're not SOLVING anything, since you don't have enough info to figure out what numbers the variables a and b represent. You are only SIMPLIFYING the expression.
The first two guys have it right. Mariah forgot that a (- -8b) is actually a (+8b).

(4a-2b)-(6a-8b)=
4a-6a-2b+8b=
-2a+6b
-2a+6b= 0
-2a = -6b
a= 3b
-2a+6b=0
6b=2a
b= 1/3 a

(4a-2b)- (6a-8b)
= 4a - 2b -6a + 8b
= 6b-2a
= 2(3b-a)

drop the () and then solve:
4a-2b-6a-8b or 4a+-2b+-6a+-8b
add(or subtract)
-2a+-10b or -2a-10b
hope this helped!
