Most newer computers use dual channel memory, meaning you must upgrade memory in matched pairs.
Usually the memory slots are colored in matched pairs to help you remember this.
Older computers could take mismatched memory.

Most of the time you can, but if its a laptop it can be kind of picky of speed, type and sizes. Most of the time it will work though.
