I've been practicing my social skills by asking women for their names. Most women seem to be pleasantly surprised to my question and they respond warmly with their preferred appellation. Does our patriarchal society minimize the value of women's names to the point that my inquiry is unexpectedly gratifying? Or maybe I have a funny accent? Or am I missing some critical subtlety of ve4rbal communication? I'm terrible at identifying emotions.

Do YOU appreciate when someone shows an interest in you? If a pretty lady walked up and asked for your name I bet you'd be a little excited. Most men are concered with looking elsewhere than a woman's mind, and for the short term interest they have; their names. From the vibe I'm getting off your question I'd be willing to bet you haven't had a lot of interaction with too many people, so I encourage you to continue practicing your social skills. Loosening up and realizing that most people appreciate friendliness more than you think is going to be critical.

I'm not saying that you're creepy, but when a random guy comes up and asks my name, i get a little creeped out. if he follows that with some decent exchange, i feel a little better about it. this is because i used to work at a bookstore where the girls wore fake name tags-we got tired of old men calling us up and asking for dates.

It's a hell of a lot nicer than introducing yourself with something like, "Hey, baby, what's your sign?" Women like being called by their names very much.

Anyone's name is important - men or women!
Don't you think your name is important?- at least to you?

They are just responding to you in kindness.
( Not realizing you normally live under a rock, I guess!?!)
