Solution (With DIAGRAM) :

Alright let's take this step by step. Now, i'm going to need your full concentration and i need you to use your imagination for this (Or just use paper :))

Refer http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/1751/circlecj5.jpg for a diagram

1) Imagine a circle with a chord .
2)Now, let M be the midpoint of the chord, hence AM = half of AB = 8 cm
3)Now, Angle AMO = 90 degrees, hence we are going to use the Pythagorean theorem
4) Using the Pythagorean Theorem, we get

(AM)^2 + (OM)^2 = (OA)^2

Where OA is the radius as it connects the center of the circle with the circumcenter.

That is, (OA)^2 = 64 + 225 = 289

Therefore, OA = 17cm

Let radius = r
Distance from centre of circle to mid point of chord = 15 cm
1/2 chord = 8 cm
r ² = 8 ² + 15 ²
r ² = 289
r = 17 cm

a² + b² = c²

The hypoteneuse of the triangle with one leg 15 cm and the other one 8 cm (half of the chord, which is bisected by the 15cm distance) is the radius of the circle.

8² + 15² = (radius)²

This is the kind of question you would do well to draw out for yourself. The answer becomes very obvious if you can visualize the set-up.

Is the Chord meant to be part of the Radius or the Circumference?

If it's part of the radius, 15+16=31?

cobranag is correct.
Radius=square root of (8square +15square)=sq root of64+225)=sq root of 289=17
So the answer is Radius=17cm

center outer rim

15cm

radius from the center to the rim is 15cm, 1cm outside..but the radius is 30 cm of the circle

(------------15cm------C.--------------15cm----)
