When changing an oil filter you put a little bit of the old oil round the seal. Might it be better to put some of the new oil round the seal instead, since the old oil is usually full of crap?

As long as you're changing the oil you might as well use new clean fresh oil on the oil filter's seal. The reason you're changing the oil is for better lubricating and to get rid of the impurities, so why not use a few fresh drops of oil on the seal?

Another tip and reason why you should do this is you also "should" fill the new filter as much as possible (so it won't spill during installtion) with new oil before installing it. There are a couple of reasons to do this. First is you will soak the paper filter and second the engine won't be starved for oil until the filter gets filled. If you don't do this the dry paper filter element is more likely to tear when hit with the high pressure of the new oil being pumped into the filter.

Just a tip from an old guy who will always love to ride... ;-)

Doesn't matter. You are only "greasing" the seal with the oil, not soaking it, nor are you going to introduce any contaminents into the new oil. You are using such an insignifacant amount on the seal, it doesn't matter what you use.

The purpose of it, is to help the seal slide along the surface as you tighten it down to ensure a good tight seal all the way around. Otherwise, the seal might grab a dry metal surface and give the premature feeling of a tight fit, and cause a leak down the road.

Use new oil, and your really not using much but a little on your finger tip. Enough to make the seal wet so it dont leak.

I use the new for that reason. Why put dirty oil on a new seal? Doesn't make sense. You gotta open the new bottle anyway.

Sure, *but* the new oil is usually in a plastic bottle, whereas the old oil is in a tray in front of you. That miniscule amount you smear on won't do any harm.

doesn't make much difference as it is not being used to lubricate anything. If you like everything just right use the new oil, if you are really a perfectionist, use a little clean axle grease.
