how often would I expect to change teh cr232 little silver batteries; the E1 error seems to appear when I push the testing stick in too hard

On a different model, I get a similar message when the batteries are low. The power surge going from 'off' to 'fully active' puts a hard drain on the battery. Jiggling the strip might cause a rapid on-off-on cycle that pulls even harder.

Temperature extremes are hard on the battery life, too. Change the battery, and buy an extra one to keep at home.

I get an E3 error when the blood sample is too small, or takes too long to get enough in, which isn't related to battery life.

E1 on the Ascentia Contour is "temperature out of range". Basically you don't seem to be in a warm room.

As you did not mention the model, I guess this would be "close enough".

That's not really a computer question, try a health forum.
