The Bible grants man dominion over all animals of the earth
We sacrifice animals for food and pelts. Animal testing is no less harmful.
Attorneys, judges and jurys have created this system. If a product has not been thoroughly tested before marketing, the company would be called irresponsible and held completely liable in a defective product suit.
Human testing used to occur on death row inmates. It was considered cruel and unusual punishment by the ACLU and was halted.
Note to John R: I don't promote animal testing, per se. I'd like to see another system developed that was just as accurate.
The question asked for justifications for animal testing. Thats what I gave her.
Product liability lawsuits have every manufacturer testing and adding caution statements to their product (ie: instructions on snowblower : Do Not Use On Roof, instructions on letter opener: "Use Of Safety Goggles is Recommended". Warning on McDonalds coffee cup "Contents are Hot" [Remember what precipated that one?]

The 'right' to test things on animals? Well, we're smarter, and we can do it. That's pretty much it. Anything else is just rationalization to allow us to do something with a clean conscience.
As an aside, that david's an amusing fellow - I gather from his answer that (unlike the ACLU) he doesn't consider using humans as test subjects to be cruel and unusual punishment. I won't even go into the whole idea of "lawyers bad; no-testing good!" that he seems to be promoting.

If you love animals, you must know how cruel testing is. You realize that animal testing is done for so many things that do not involve medicine, such as for cosmetics (i.e. pouring acids in rabbits' eyes--aka The Draize Test).
Government money has also funded silly scientific research that involved cutting cat's heads open and sticking electrodes on the brains to measure sexual stimulants just for the sake of knowledge. Nothing medicinal about that.
But, if you are really upset about how animals suffer, no where is the cruelty so extensive and horrendous as in the food industry.
I recommend you read a book about Henry Spira called "Ethics Into Action". It is a fascinating biography of a goodhearted activist who accomplished great things in his life.
I think that before we go after scientists, we must look to ourselves and how each of us individually contributes to torture, endorsing animal brutalization and exploitation with our money in the name of food, sport, and entertainment.

is this a question of rights?
we (our society) tests on animals primarily to develop cures to illnesses and injuries that humans and other animals suffer. without animal testing, there wouldn't be tylenol in your medicine cabinet. chemotherapy patients would be rolling the dice with their lives every time they received treatment. barbaro (kentucky derby winner a few years ago) would have been shot immediately. dogs wouldn't be able to have cataracts removed. and you could go on forever.
there is no doubt our lives, and animals' lives, are longer, healthier, and i would argue better, because of animal research. remember, 95 percent of the time, animal research involves drug testing, surgical procedures, and other medical advances, NOT cosmetic tests.

because a bible grants dominion over animals
does that give me the right to pour gas on a puppy and set it alight?
why use animals to test stuff to help humans ?
are humans at risk of extinction
there are too many humans anyway
the main reason animals are used is because it is the cheapest way to make a profit
