The most current stats I could find were from 2004. It comes to somewhere around $94.5 Billion dollars. I'm sure it's much more by now.

Congress talks about the "social security lockbox", but I hate to tell you that 100% of the tax money collected each year goes to the general fund and is blown on stupid projects such as the earmarks listed in this story in USA Today.

I would like a way to control at least part of the money that they collect in taxes. I am getting a 15% return on my 401K plan right now. Why can't I invest part of my forced retirement money in mutual funds instead of it going to the general fund where greedy politicians want to spend it?

I don't know where to start.

You ask has the government taken money out of SS.

Taken money out of SS what ?

Have they paid it back .

Have they paid who back ?

SS is the government, it is not like SS has a bank account somewhere, where they keep money.

. Since 1968, the first year SS had a surplus.

All surplus SS tax revenue, has been invested in US Treasury Bonds.

There is no lock box, there is no other place to invest surplus SS revenue, other than US treasury bonds.

No President or Congress, has spent surplus SS revenue.

I think it would take some effort, but after a diligent search you would probably come across it somewhere --- although I doubt it would be a government website that would hold the answer.

It's simple. All of it. And both parties are equally guilty. They all talk about the "Social Security lockbox", but not a one of them has ever respected the concept!
