More deaths have been attributed to hurricanes than to tornadoes, although you do not want to experience either one. Hurricanes often spawn tornadoes when they cross onto land. Hurricanes expend a great deal more energy than a tornado. They last longer, are bigger, and result in wind damage, flood damage, and other severve weather damage that tornadoes do but on a much smaller time and space scale.

While wind speeds in tornadoes can be higher than those in hurricanes, tornadoes are very much smaller. A tornado is tens of metres in diameter and comes from a meso scale system, a severe thunderstorm. A hurricane is a synoptic scale system many tens of kilometres in diameter. An individual hurricane can last for days or even weeks while a tornado's life is measured in minutes. Hurricanes can kill thousands at a time - look at Tropical Cyclone Sidr in Bangla Desh recently - while tornado deaths seldom reach 100.

I think tornadoes because there are many and pretty much as powerful as a hurricane, and hurricanes happen only once every several years. A tornadoe can throw as much as a house and throw it into the open. Hurricanes don't leave as much destruction as a tornado.

this sounds more like a debate. any tornado survivor will tell you winds of 200 plus miles per hour took everything they had, killed everything in its path. However, tornadoes as devastating as they are effect a lot less people -- damages may be extensive but the over all area effected is less than 1/2 of what hurricanes can effect. Hurricane survivors can tell you the same thing. in all actuality hurricanes are MORE DESTRUCTIVE because of their size, wind damage, rain damage and tides, they also destroy much needed wetlands that are suppose to protect people from floods (global warming also does.). Hurricanes point blank effect more people based on how large they are when they hit land. best of luck.

I would guess that Hurricanes are more deadly because they last longer than Tornadoes. Hurricanes tend to happen more often too and can be devastating in 3rd world countries.

Hurricanes. They are wide spread, have a storm surge, AND they contain tornadoes.

tornado- very little warning, whereas we know well ahead of time that a hurricane is coming and can prepare or leave.

With hurricanes, there is the chance for flooding...I think that is worse
