The wreath represents the wheel of the year or the sun wheel. It shows that as the days lengthen and the sun returns to the sky, it turns the wheel of the year and the new year starts.

The evergreens represent Balder, the slain son of Odin, who will return after Ragnarök to renew life on the world tree. Since an evergreen survives through the winter, they represent the life-renewing powers of Balder.

Glad Yule! (instead of Merry Christmas)

There is probably some Historical significance, but, in reality it that they pretty. I doubt many people today hang a wreath thinking about some 100 year old tradition. They hang the wreath thinking; "Ha, I got mine up before anyone and it the best looking too"!

I put up a wreath, not only because the look pretty, but the circle shape of the wreath represents this to me: Just like a circle has no beginning and no end, there is no beginning and no end to God's love and we celebrate the greatest gift of His love on Christmas - the gift of His Son. That's what a wreath represents to me!

Because they are pretty. People make their own and get very creative. You should hit a craft store sometime and make one.
