how come factory chrome rims can be left on during the winter but you have to take of aftermarket chrome rims for the winter. I ask because I have a set of 18" black with a machine finish lip that I want to leave on for the winter

This has to do with the manufacturing of the rims. The better the material, the more chrome applied will have a lasting quality to them. Aftermarket rims are a question mark at best to quality.

Chrome wheels will go to crap if used in the winter no matter if OE or aftermarket. De-icers applied to roads in the winter will eat the finish on any alloy wheel, chrome or painted. I prefer steel wheels for winter use myself but they are not available for all applications.
