I have a one and a half year old hermanns and I am confused about uvb requirement. Does this species have a 'high' or 'very high' requirement? Should I be using a Repti Glo 5 or 10? The tube is positioned approx 12" away from the tortoise.

I'm being told different things by different people and books! I want to simulate the natural environment but the 5.0 states it's for tropical reptiles, whereas the 10 is for desert! Help would be appreciated! thanks in advance.

My belief is the higher the better. There is no UVB bulb that comes close to the UV output of the sun.

UVB is a confusing subject because a lot of it is opinion rather than science.

Hermann's are a 'grassland' species, so use the desert settings for light and heat, but they generally prefer a little more humidity than deserts.

All you have to do is look at their native habitat- scrub grasslands, rocky outcrops, near-desert conditions, etc. to see what they need.

Just make sure it has a shady retreat to get away from the light and heat, and that there is an area of higher humidity to simulate burrows, etc.
