In the case of Oil, which is carbon, we mine this liquid to provide heat energy to drive transportation systems or petro-chemicals for plastics. The most effective use is petro-chemical. Burning oil destroys the potential. The only extension lies in finding an alternative. Most alternatives just mask the dasterly deed by burning something else. So what is the point.
To effectively extend something is to get the maxium use. If we can continue to recycle the same elements that is cost effective. An element is the most stable form. Aluminum can be made and remade into infinite forms, remelted and reformed again. Repetive use, that is your answer.
