Buy a name brand and look for the higher flush ratings. Many of the cheaper toilets will nut flush well and you will have to keep a plunger on hand constantly. There have been a lot of advances in the low water use toilets and the flush of some of them is better than the old ones that used 3 to 5 gallons of water per flush.

Depends on where the leak is. there are seals between the tank and the base. There is also a wax ring that selas the base to the top of the soil pipe leading away from the toilet.

To buy a new one go to a place like Home Depot. They will have everything you need. They sometimes have people on duty who can give you a few pointers about removal and re-installation. Remember to turn the water off before removing the float valve in the tank.

You might want some nice rubber gloves and wash things down with a mis of warm water and clorox before you begin.

IF you do it correctly there is little mess, a lot of grunting and a nice result.

If you cant fix your old one go with an environmental friendly toilet with a 3" flush valve. The are more economical and use less water. They also sell eco toilets with a 2 3/4" valve as well. The wider the diameter of the flush valve means more section and less water. Home depot Lowe's and most other hardware and DIY stores that care plumbing will sell these toilets. and also if you intend to sell your home later down the road get handicap accessible. Why? they sit a little higher up no more than two to three inches and will help in selling by making bathrooms handicap accessible.

I'd don't like the push button flush ones. Not easy to use. Prefer a handle flush.
Soft close seats are good though.

Got to a plumbing supply place, or a large home center, and pick one out. You can also get names of plumbers who will install it for you.
