I would like to make my own blending stumps (tortillons) for pencil drawing and shading. They are not stocked in shops I live near, and I can't buy online. I have access to lots of pulp paper, though. Does anyone know how to DIY? Thanks a lot in advance!

You might try a local school or college that has drawing classes. Check with the instructors and see if you can buy one or two from them or post a note on the bulletin board that you need to purchase some. I use www.aswexpress.com but that's useless if you can't buy online.
http://www.monologues.co.uk/Portraits/Tortillon.htm is an illustrated webpage showing how it's done. Haven't a clue how well it works. good luck!

Really old question but if someone comes across it like I did, if you can't order online and if they're not stocked near you then use a Small piece of felt, an a4 piece can go a really long way if you use small bits to blend. It's what I used before I could get a paper stump

I never bother with those 'specialized' art tools. I just use my thumb. It helps to have a good eraser handy, and don't press your pencil onto the paper with too much force. For me, I find a 0.7 mechanical pencil with 2B lead to be one of the best leads for blending, but many people advice against using mechanical pencils for drawing. Try out different pencils and see which brand, degree and type (normal or mechanical) suits your purpose best. Drawing well comes with experience. Good luck :)

The torchon (stump) is basically just tightly rolled paper or cardboard. The problem with trying to make your own is getting it tight enough to be able to sand the tip down again. I've tried, and not had any success. I even made my own papers, and tried forming my wet pulp into a crayon shape...no good.
I use the sites below to order my stumps....

I'm so old I can remember when we just used thing cardboard rolled up tight, or else our thumbs and fingers or a piece of fabric.
