I am a U.S. licensed master plumber by trade. I own my own business. In order to become successful you need a vast knowledge of different disciplines, therefore where you begin is not as important as where you are going or want to be.
A lot of your answers are obviously being given by our British brethren, and when I lived there the primadonna mindset of the electricians would drive anyone crazy in the construction business, however here to become a master of the plumbing trade you must be capable of designing and installing systems for anything from a house to a hospital and it is the most respected of all the trades so for you out there who believes plumbing is for the ":not so brite" go change another lite bulb. As for you young man it's about the journey, and plumbing is a difficult, hard, rewarding and respected trade. Go back and look into the cholera epidemics in London a few hundred years, all because of insufficient plumbing. In the U.S. the plumbers have a motto "The plumber protects the health of the nation" the respect comes by itself.
If on the other hand you want a clean primadonna trade become a sparky.

If you are not too brainy and like to keep your hands clean and make a reasonable living, become a domestic electrician. If you have slightly more brains, don't mind getting your hands dirty or scrabbling around on your knees, try plumbing although everybody these days is jumping on the bandwagon and the industry may become saturated. Otherwise try air conditioning, don't have to be too brainy but the money and status is good. To gauge the quality of people in these industries, try looking in these Yahoo Answers, there are some very sad people out there.

I started working many years ago as a plumbers helper and had an opportunity to start work in an electrical shop. I found the electrical work was cleaner and had many opportunities for advancement. The main thing is to find a line of work that you enjoy as you will be working for many years. I found that I liked the repair of equipment better than either and have made a good living for the last 30 years servicing equioment that required both electrical and plumbing skills.

This is strictly an outsider's perspective, since I work as neither, but I have hired both for projects at our house. I would go for electrician; the work is a lot cleaner.
If you are investigating these trades options, be sure and determine if the work in your area for either/both is steady. I have friends who are union electricians, and they work in construction, which tends to be a little sporatic. Not a bad paying job, but regular periods where they are not working, waiting for the next job.

Plumbing can be hard work . If you want to deal with leaks, twisting ,cutting , threading and carrying sometimes heavy pipe. It is simpler to learn, and it ends there. Gas pipe needs to be welded after 1 1/2 to 2".Electrician requires more in your head. There are many more categories. Residential, industrial,Maint, machinery, electronics, airplanes, automotive, generaters, air conditioning, security systems, communications, computer systems and many more.
