Hello there, wondering if anyone can help. I cannot play DVD's on my computer for some reason. I have windows media player and that is in working order as i use it for putting music on my mp3 player.
I recently tried to play a store brought DVD. It opened up in media player and the computer recognised what the DVD was but said it couldn't play it, something about needing a decoder?! Any ideas?

Try using RealPlayer (the free edition), http://www.real.com.au/7030.html
It plays DVD without anything else to install.
You can use a DVDRipper like XiliSoft, to convert the DVD movie(s) into .avi or .mpeg files so that it can be played in mediaplayers. (http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-ripper.html)
I personally prefer Realplayer

Definately try VLC player, I have only had it not play a few formats on me. I also believe that there are actually 2 laser emitters in a DVD drive. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong on that. There isn't actually a laser that reads both CDR and DVD, it is in fact a secondary laser used for DVD. So it may be that your drive has crapped out on you if it won't read DVDs at all. It would recognise it, just not be able to play it. I have had hardware malfunction and break after wear and it just doesn't work one day. There is no real warning to it.

Try installing the latest version of Media Player (Windows Media Player 11). Also, try to install VLC Media Player and try playing the DVDs.

If your computer has a DVD drive, sure. Stick a DVD in, close it, and see what happens. Most computer less than 5 years old have a DVD player.

Hello there, I have read your problem about not being able to play DVD on your PC using Windows Media Player,
so I tried this out for myself to see if I could play a DVD on mine by using Windows Media Player 11,
and it played a DVD first time, so you should be able to play DVDs on your PC without much problem,
one of the questions I would like to ask is have you set your PC to play DVDs for region 2 which is what we are,
check this to see if you have got region 2 set and if you find that it is set to region 1 then you will have to change the settings to region 2 to play DVDs in this country (UK).
To check to see if you have the correct region set for the UK click on:
Start, then
My Computer
Right click on the HCC (C:) then
click on properties, then
click on Hardware, then
click on your DVD then properties then
click on DVD region,
you will see current region, it should say "2" if its not change this to "2" by using the list and choose United Kingdom for this country once that is done just click OK on all the little windows that are open.
good luck with this

Quick question do you have a dvd player on your pc?
if so, then i had the same issue.Basically dust accumulates your lense and it cannot read the DVD. What you have to do is to open the tray and blow in it or get compressed air from staples and spray it in.
Or.
get a dvd lense cleaner.
Hope it works.

You need the codecs
go to Microsoft website to download
If you are using Windows Vista Home Basic it will not play DVD's - Microsoft saw fit not to include the codecs in this version and are trying to get you to buy the codecs.
Alternatively, there are loads of other free players around.
Go to www.majorgeeks.com and search in the left side window search bar.

WMP does not usually come with the bits needed to play DVDs. I'd recommend getting something like PowerDVD or another dedicated DVD player software.

WMP can be crappy when it wants to be. However, the best player (in my opinion) is VideoLan by VLC. That will literally play anything and seeing as it seems you do have a DVD drive, that player will play your movie for you without any probs. Visit the site below to download. It's totally free.
