If you are painting, I would make sure the space is extremely ventilated.
And as far as hair dye is concerned, this is now more so one of those old wives tales, this stems from when hair dye had toxic chemicals in it. [IE Arsenic] Also if you are doing it yourself they even have ammonia free hair dye's so you don't even have to worry about the smell.
Though I would probably wait to dye my hair till the end of pregnancy, all those hormanes can make it not come out right. Same with perms, etc.
If concerned talk to your OB/Midwife.

Edit - I forgot to add, its fine, just not in the first tri-mester. No chemicals in the first tri.

Being in a room while painting is only ok If the room is WELL ventilated. Open windows and doors with maybe a fan blowing. Dying your hair is just fine. There will be NO chemicals absorbed into your scalp. Thats rediculous. The only problem you might have is pregnant hair sometimes doesnt take to the dye. Might come out splotchy or not take at all. I have three kids whom i dyed my hair every 2 months while pregnant (highlights and all) and also painted their nurseries!! One is an honor student in the gifted program and the other 2 are not far behind!! Trust your doctor though not everyone on yahoo :)

you can dye your hair but go to a hairdressers salon and don't do a home job as those dye's are notorius for causing all sorts of problems. Salon dyes are different to what you can buy at the supermarket and its worth the extra money anyway.

As for painting, you can be in the room as long as it is very very well ventilated (and don't climb on any ladders in case you fall!!!!!!) and you take regular breaks. Wear a mask as well. You can buy low fume paints now too.
I think the 'harm' lies in inhaling the fumes and getting dizzy, lightheaded or getting headaches. This can elevate your blood pressure which isn't so great for you or baby.
However if you take pre-cautions and wear a face mask you should be fine.

Best of luck!!

My doc said no. I painted a studio at 4 weeks (before I knew), he said that was ok but not to do it again. It is not advised to dye your hair also. Alot of women do it, but you do absorb those harmful chemicals through your skin, in fact, it's been linked to cancer over time. Just remember that anything that is harmful to you, which both of these things are, is most likely harmful to your baby.

I would stay out of any rooms that are being painted.
As far as your hair, "I" was always told not too do it.
Something about the chemicals be absorbed into the scalp.
I would check with your DR. though.
