Is there an upmarket, democrat-leaning newspaper in New York?

In the UK, there is the Guardian newspaper which is a mainstream serious newspapers for left-wing professional people. What paper is similar to this in New York?

Why would you want a newspaper that spins the stories to the left? I would think, if you were seriously interested in the news, you would want a moderate newspaper that didn't try to put bipartisan spin on anything...

But then again, what do I know...
