I am not sure on that - I mean alot of people died in house fires because they couldn't smell the smoke while sleeping, or maybe they thought it was just a dream ....?
EDIT
Interesting - I was curious after your question
The answer or study is no - you can't smell most odors / smoke while sleeping - check it out http://sleepdisorders.about.com/cs/sleepdestroyers/a/scent.htm

Yes, it is the body natural defence system if you think about it. I will wake up when I smell anything! I can also identify what it is too. This has happened to me many times. Once in the middle of the night I smelt something cooking. I woke a relative up and told them someone is cooking eggs & toast downstairs. When I told her what they were cooking she was like- "How do you know , I can't smell anything ?". We both go down- sure enough someone is cooking eggs on toast- it was another relative who came home early from their shift at work!!
