maybe these groups just dont believe what the major parties stand for and they elect to run as independents as it is how they perceive they can reach their goals. There is more diversity in being an independent than their is with running with a major party.

We've got Penny Wong! Minister for Climate Change and Water for the Australian Labor Party. She's over in Bali right now with Kevin Rudd negotiating the Kyoto emission targets.
She's a woman with an Asian heritage and she has one of the most important portfolios in our current government. How cool is that? :)
It just flies in the face of Mr Howard's "women should wear skirts in my office, not pants", "climate change is a myth" and "we'll decide who comes to our country and blah blah blah" xenophobic reign of old.
The future is a little brighter and hopefully we'll see even more balanced cultural and gender representation of us in government from now on. Times they are a-changing :)

The mayor of melbourne is asian...doesnt that tell u something?! he even has an asian accent...not an australian one
