erm...some of these answers are a little off track.
Discrimination in this sense is the behaviour of treating someone differently than another because of a dislike of some of their personal characteristics i.e. race, religion, gender etc. i.e. a boss not hiring someone from another country because he dislikes the colour of the persons skin and harbours racist feelings.
Therefore, positive discrimination is treating someone differently, but in a positive way, because of their differences. This is still a form of discrimination and can be illegal - examples may be : the police hiring someone who is from a minority group (asian, african-american etc.) because they are encouraged to have more ethnic minorities on the force.
Another would be a woman manager hiring another woman as her assistant rather than a man because she prefers working with someone of the same sex.
A simple one is the way bouncers let attractive young ladies jump the queues at bars and clubs but make men and other ladies wait in line.
It is important to remember discrimination is only considered wrong when it is based on personal characteristics and not merit. In each of our examples, the individual has been given an unfair advantage due to a personal characteristic that has nothing to do with their abilities and is based on prejudiced ideas. All the other people (who may have got the job, got into the club etc.) have been treated unfairly.
