water is polar, so it will dissolve polar compounds (these usually contain an O,N, or a halide)

hydrocarbons (like gasoline) are straight chains with no polar molecules in them. so they are nonpolar, and they dissolve things that are non-polar

its easy..........the ionic compounds usually dissolve in polar solvents nd strictly do not dissolve in non polar solvnts.............on the other hand............the covalent compounds dissolve in non polar compounds...........
