In the last movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, there is a scene between Nicky Parsons and Jason Bourne that suggests they have a history. Is there anything in Ludlum's books that indicates this or is it something added for the movies.

Also, have you read any of the other Bourne novels by Eric Van Lustbader? How do they compare with Ludlum's books.

For what it's worth, I haven't read any of the books, but I'm going to start soon.

Nicky Parsons is not even a character in the book. The only similarities between the book and the movie are a few of the character names, and the name treadstone, and the fact that Bourne works for the CIA, has amnesia, and is trying to figure out who he is. (In the book, he finds out that .....wait, I don't want to spoil it!)

What Bourne's missions are, his background story, everything else has no connection to the movie plot. Conklin's character for example is completely different from the book then the movie, so is Marie and her relationship to Jason.

And the 2nd and 3rd movies have NO similarities to the books what so ever! They only share a name. No story details are shared at all!!

The great thing is since you like the movie, is you can read the book and not know the outcome, so you won't be spoiled! Both the movies and the books are great. When you read it you will understand why they had to change everything but the names. The original story centers around the Cold War and was so dated the plot couldn't be used.

And for the record, Lustbader's Bourne books are not as good. They are just action books and they lack the insight into Bourne's thinking Ludlum's novels so exciting. They also lack the suspense that Ludlum's novels have. The timeline is all off. The character of Bourne should be in about his sixties in Lustbader's novels, but he has him running around like he is 25 dodging bullets and performing death defying stunts. He doesn't really continue the story, he is just using the name Bourne.

The first movie is based on the main theme of the books:

(man wakes up with amnesia to find out he was a cold blooded assassin. Or is he? dun dun dun.....)

However that is mostly where the similarities end. The books center around the hunt for the legendary terrorist "Carlos the Jackal" from the 70s with whom Bourne is mysteriously connected. That was a lot of windup to tell you that the plots of the 2nd and 3rd movies bear little or no relation to the books.

I liked the Ludlum Bourne books quite a bit and the movies also. I read the first Van lustbader book and it was only "OK" His writing is decent but he doesn't have Ludlum's knack for creating tension and descriptive action.
