I'm looking at laptops on line, have never owned one. The one I'm looking at is a dell and the battery life is only 2 hours. I mainly plan to use it in my home. Will I be able to plug it in? It does not mention if it comes with an alternate power source. thanks

Yes, any laptop you purchase will include a power adapter. In regards to battery life, you may be able to purchase a higher capacity battery (at the expense of additional weight and cost).

If you are purchasing a new laptop, it is recommend that you allow the computer to drain the battery completely before recharging fully. Repeat this step about 2-3 times. This will train your battery to understand the max capacity it can store.

If you will indeed be plugging in most of the time at home, I would recommend that you remove the battery if it is fully charged. This is to prevent the computer from constantly trying to charge the battery, which will lead to shorter battery life in the future.

Other tips to keep in mind if you want to get greater life out of your batteries include:
- Turn off wireless when not in use.
- Set your power settings to put your hard drive to sleep when not in use. (In WinXP, go to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options). You can set when the monitor and hard disks turn off, or when the system goes on standby or hibernates.

Hope these tips help! =)

You can run them on the battery or plug it in.

If you purchase a new Laptop, it comes with a power adaptor which you plug into a wall receptacle (socket) and into the computer.

Some Laptops may have the power adaptor built-in; these Laptops will just have a power cord.

The Dell Laptop will come with Power Adaptor.

I hope the battery life is more than 2 hours (Battery should be at least 2 to 3 yearsdepending on use and care).

I believe you mean the productivity time when using the laptop on battery only - no external power source.

Dell usually offers at least 2 types of batteries

Example: the Dell Inspiron 1501 comes with a 6 cell battery and you can order it with a 9 cell battery - the 9 cell batery give up to 5.5 hours of productivity (this depends on haow often you access your Hard Drive, CD/DVD etc).

yes, u can use cable and adaptor provided, anyway if u use it for long time, u can take out batteries to save their lifetime.
2 hours for battery seems little for me, look at HP or Fujitsu, u can have 4-5 hours on battery.
