Technically storage space is a type of memory. Granted thought normally when people refer to memory their mean RAM. Also CPU can refer to the processor or the computer as a whole. Either way their not technically wrong
Although personally I think it poor practice. Interchanging like that can get confusing.

The majority of people who use computers; know how to use them, but do not necessarily know the technical terms connected with computers.
As the first person stated they compare the computer to the Human mind - you store your knowledge in memory, not on a Hard Drive.
As far as referring to the computer (case and components within) as the CPU, a few years back many retailers sold desktops and towers as CPU's. Hence a lot of people are under the misconception that CPU refers to the Desktop and/or Tower; not just the Central Processor Unit (chip) inside the Desktop and/or Tower.
Hopes this clears up where some of the misconceptions are coming from.

well storage space is also memory. it's just permanent memory. so they are right in that. unless they are confusing it with ram, then they are just poor confused people and you shouldn't hate them, they are just ill-informed. although it is very frustrating.
the thing about calling a computer a cpu, well i have seen plenty of that and I don't know where it started but yes it's annoying. This was a fun george word, he went through a stage where he kept calling a computer a "cp", which evidently is a cross between a pc and a cpu. if you don't know who george is, look up "chronicles of george" on a search engine, it's every enlightening, especially for people like you who hate it when other people don't know what they're talking about :)

memory "as they say" is compared to human memory and as referred to the cpu.. some people.. well Most of the people think that the whole thing in that case is the cpu because if that is gone their computer wont work..
we know those thing because we know computer.. we know this that.. BUT some people don't they are just pure USER and doesnt have that much of a knowledge about what's going or what's inside it..

Because average Americans are embarrassingly ignorant when it comes to computer technology. Those terms don't bother me so much anymore but when my GF says that she has a terrible virus and she needs to reboot (when she really means reformat/recover) its hard not to correct her. Actually I can't say it's just computers either, her mom told me the other day that spinal taps cause schlorosis, I kid you not, and the abosolute worst is that when someone says something GENUINELY stupid and you correct them they treat you as a know it all, as if knowing basic information was a poor concept.

Ummm, I've forgotten, core mem failure... Seriously, as a techo, you need to forgive people this and pitch your speak at the appropriate level. People also drive cars but a lot wouldn't know what the actual engine was either...

Because the term megabytes and gigabytes have the word bytes in them? Like MB GB for short.
AND
During highschool awhile back, I took a computer class where on the test, it asked what is the CPU. And it showed components such as the speakers, mouse, keyboard, monitor, and case. I wrote in my answer (in a multiple answer form test) as none of the above and got it wrong. So I argued for days on out with the teacher. Stupid teacher. Thanks for listening.

the scale of a usb force is all the way down to the hardware it somewhat is made out of, the storage is made up of of tiny actual switches that are the two on or off (0 or a million)(binary) you could only make it greater effective. you could in spite of the undeniable fact that compress records into zip records etc.

Because they relate it to their human memory, which is where they store things.
