My mom's a virgo. With them it's only 'my way or the highway'. Everything has to be **** and span (cleanliness is next to godliness). It was very hard, being a creative, artistic woman, to get along with my mom when I was young. It's better now. She has mellowed, but she still can't help herself butting into people's lives, thinking she knows best.

I'm into astrology and I think the other planetary positions have a lot do do with a person's personality. Just because their sun sign is Virgo doesn't mean they are going to seem like a stereotypical Virgo. Moon sign and Rising sign have an especially big impact on a person's personality, but like I said, all planetary positions at the date, place and time of someone's birth will affect their personality.
So, to answer your question, astrologers are just describing Virgo; they are not describing every other planetary position in a person's birth chart... since that's individual.
And you also have to keep that in mind when reading up on Virgo --- that there are other signs that make up someone's personality.

Yeah, I understand where you are coming from. I am a Virgo and do share traits of the virgin. What I think it is (like you mentioned) is that it takes Virgos awhile to become comfortable with somebody, so to outsiders, they appear dull and boring. I don't know why earth signs get such a bad rep. I am an earth sign and a majority of my friends are earth signs and we have had some serious crazy fun times together. I think some of the other signs just don't have enough patience and will unfortunately automatically dismiss the Virgo.

I am a Virgo female and everything I have ever heard about us makes us sound like we are obsessive. The things I am into may make me seem like I'm obsessing, but to people who don't really care about anything it would appear obsessive when in fact it's not. I am analytical, but I find this to be a great quality and I am observant. Usually people who have a problem with these characteristics I find have things to hide. I don't think Virgos are shy at all, but we are reserved with our feelings and friendships. In my opinion, everyone does not need to know every facet of your being, so with people I am comfortable with they see the talkative woman with an amazing sense of humor. I am loyal to a fault, an excellent friend and a good listener. I am also very confident and my confidence is often mistaken for arrogance.
I don't think we are such complex individuals like everyone makes us out to be. We are probably one of the most misunderstood signs, but I find that when people are totally opposite of us, it makes them feel inferior and that is not my problem.

I haven't always thought that the descriptions of my own sign, Taurus, are right-on but as I get older I find that some do ring true after all. Of course Virgos in daily life are more than that broad definition that you mentioned- and that could be the influence of other signs in their charts that they are on the cusp of, etc. For instance my boyfriend is a Leo, but was just born shy of being a Virgo and while he shows strong traits of Leo- the charisma, the joviality and attention-loving he also has a very Virgo undertone in his loyalty and sincerity. Virgos DO overanalyze (my sister) and they are very practical minded and slightly shy but its a broad description that doesn't include the nuances of an individual's personality

I am a Virgo, so I speak from personal experience. In the beginning I am shy and would rather be to myself, but once I am put in a situation, I adapt. Once I meet someone and get to know them, I can be quite talkative. Obsessive, yes absolutely. Sense of humor, I sure hope so. We are perfectionist, stubborn, hard-headed, always right, opinionated. Yep, that's me.

Virgo is not appreciated by our culture --that is why it is treated so poorly in the keywords. For example, rarely is it pointed out how sexy and sensual Virgo can be (even if you may have to brush your teeth first).
Virgo is one of the signs of the Goddess and even now, the world we live in is patriarchal in nature and suspicious of the ancient temple priestesses who would sleep with a stranger in Her name (thus siring children with a claim to a divine origin and a threat to the patriarchal blood lines).

Well that's just b/c you just answered your own question.
THEY are only like that to ppl who don't know them but once they get to know you - ofcourse they'll open up and relax and ease up more.
And also you are basing your feedback and your opionions on sun-signs alone !!!
But no- they wouldn't seem like that IF he/she had a sag rising or Gemini rising, etc. <----for example.
