Honestly .. the cover attracts me lol!
If the cover looks interesting, I'll read the back. And if I like that I might read the first bit of the first chapter.

I have no idea, sometimes it is merely the author, other times the book jacket blurb, other times a review, and more than once purely based on cover art.

I did recently come back from the library with three books all of which claimed the author was some version of "the new Heinlein" and I felt a bit like a dog owned by Pavlov.

Recommendations from others usually persuade me to read a book. For example, I currently want to read the book Eat, Pray, Love because it has been getting so many accolades.
Other than that, I just glimpse through the summaries on the backs of the books and choose an interesting one.

I only read non fiction books so anything with a catchy title usually helps me out on what to pick or what the back says about the book

If I'm buying it I prefer to go with the authors I'm familiar with or a book someone has recommended, if I'm at the library I read the blurb or possibly the first few pages if I'm caught up in the first few lines then I borrow it.

I used to be willing to buy certain authors that I liked. But all of them have disappointed me with recent books so I do not dare buy any new books. I check the used book store at our library and also they have a give-away shelf where there is no cost.

more often than not the cover catches my attention. ill usually ask someone who works in the book store for their own opinions and i usually stick close to authors of books i have previously read.
