Deffinitely not too old. You are just beginning. Do it now...I am almost 40, and wish I had done what I always wanted to do.

Being a paleontologist means that you could just learn all the stuff you need to know and then you need money for traveling and thats it. Nobody really employs you. If you want to go to China for example, you buy a ticket, find an excavation spot, and dig. 20 is never too old to do anything. People start completely new careers well in their 50's or 60's.

Many years ago I heard a woman talking about becoming a doctor. She was already in her 30's and didn't know if it was too late. She would be in her 40's before she could begin practicing medicine. Her friend told her "You're going to be 40 anyway. Do you want to be 40 and doing what you're doing now or be 40 and doing what you want to do?"

My brother in law, by the way, changed majors 5 times in college, finally got his doctorate in Pharmacology. Then he quit and went to Med School. He was well over 40 when he began practicing medicine. His background though has helped him know more than the average doctor about drug interactions.

Seems like a background in architecture could equally help w/ digging. The earth is a bunch of structures after all.

Hey, my ex went for a degree in anthropology, and several of the classes were for archaeology. He went on digs in different locations in the United States, for school. He was in his 30s, and there were students of all ages in his classes & on the digs. It sounded so cool, I always wished I could do it, too. So if you have the opportunity, go back to school & major in anthro. or archaeology!

Even if you dont end up in China, you will always be glad you learned about it & got to experience it! But to be honest, the job market for that is not so huge, he ended up teaching. I miss that guy.

You are 20, not 80! Of course you are not too old for anything at this point. I don't know if you have already taken your general education classes, but by the time you are taking electives in your major (by junior year, usually), you will have opportunities to do at least some field work. The furthre you go in your education, the more chances you will have.

Age is relative. You are very very young. Consider that you will live to be 100 years, you have just live only 20% of your life! Follow your heart because you will have to live in that field for many years. If you can say, I love to go to work everyday! in your chosen field, then you are in the right field of study. If you won't be able to say the above, rethink your education. No education that you have so far is ever lost. Who knows, but you might just be the person who integrate architecture with paleontology? Go for it!

If you REALLY want to do it, then go for it! You are never too old for anything! And on top of that, you will most likely regret not doing your dream job.
