I would have to say around the 6 month mark as well. They kinda scared me and I would tense up, which would make them hurt a little. All I can say is go with them. Like everyone tells you, just breathe and go with them. Its hard to decribe but when you have them you will know what i mean. The more you tense the more they hurt.

I have been told the same for labor pains and contractions. Just go with them and they will be a lot easier.

Later in my first pregnancy- around 34 weeks and earlier with each subsequent pregnancy. My 4th I think I had Braxton Hicks before I knew I was pregnant-LoL!
Seriously, they are a pre-cursor of what labor will start out as. The tightening, breath stealing feeling that focuses your attention on your abdomen. It hardens as the contraction hits, but they do not become painful and regular over time as real contractions do. With my first it was around 34 weeks I felt the tightening on occasion and around 30 weeks with the 4th.

I started getting them around 6 months. They do not hurt. You can tell you are having one if your stomach feels as tight as your forehead. If your stomach feels squishy like your check, then you are not having one.
