How are political parties critical in creating and maintaining democracy?

Revolution must be staged by those who believe in democracy to change communism.

Frankly, I think the warnings from the founders against parties should have been heeded. No way to know now how things would have gone without them. But critical for creating and maintaining democracy? I don't think that they are. They turned the administration of our nation into an interminable competition to "win" against each other.
