A sorority means "sisterhood". It is a Greek letter organization for women in which, while most women join in college, they are members for life. The main reason people join a sorority is so that they can develop close friendships. In addition, most sororities are actively involved in the campus social life, there are philanthropic activities, along with leadership training, encouragement of academic effort, etc. At some schools, the sororities own or lease houses in which many of their members live.
As you can tell from some of the other postings, a number of people are very negative about the Greek organizations. This is largely because, rather than being open to anyone who wants to join, potential members "pledge" and must be picked by the existing members in order to join. Therefore, many people have been turned down for membership, sometimes for reasons as shallow as their clothing or appearances. Many consider the groups to be elitist. In addition, it is quite expensive to belong to a sorority, so there are many people who cannot consider membership because it is too expensive.
I should say that I have never been a member of a sorority, but a number of my students belong and they are very dedicated to their "sisters". I can particularly see the purpose at very large schools. Having gone to a big school as an undergraduate, I had trouble connecting to other people. I would meet people in class whom I liked, but never find them again among the hundreds of people in the class. Those who joined sororities had "instant families" who supported them and provided them with the social contacts they needed.

Sororities (sp?) or fraternities are group of students that form an organization with similar interests and support each other. Sor- come from Latin for sister, a frat means brother. Sororities for females and fraternities for males. Many are elitist and discriminate excessively.

It's a club full of girls that want to socialize and party in college. They usually cost a grip load of money but hey who said you can't buy friendship? :)
