If you really can't take classes check out what your local library has to offer. At least what they have wil be free to check out and there may be other program available via interlibrary loan. That would be for singing. I don't ever recall seeing anything like an acting class on DVD, though there are plenty of books.

For acting, I promise you there is nothing like a class. You need that live feedback and you need other people to react off. Half of all acting is reacting to what others say and do in the scene. You can absolutely start by reading up on different techniques, but you really do need to get into a class.

Haunt your library, look at the catalogue online for every library near you and see what you can find.

Edit - I did find this: http://www.voicemaestro.net/ but I don't know how good it is and it certainly can't give you personalized feedback, but neither can a CD or DVD. The problem with not going to a professional teacher is that you won't know when you're doing something incorrectly and possibly hurting your voice.

There are also these, but I suspect for some only the first tease is free, not all lessons:

http://www.thecentralspot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=AI&Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=freesinginglessons
http://www.affordablesingingvoicelessons.com/

I'm sure there are more if you just search them out, but again these do not give you any kind of feedback.

best of luck,
Marianne

Acting is interactive. You can't learn to act with a CD. You must take acting classes where you learn to act and re-act with other actors. If you want to use CD's you're not ready to be an actor.

Acting is a process, you need to see/hear/and do what an acting teacher is telling you and that must be done, in an acting class with teacher and students.

How would taking voice lessons be wasting your money? I say do it, go for it!
