There are a TON of orphanages there - the word "orphanage" isn't really used anymore, though. Look under children's homes, youth homes, group homes - that kind of stuff.
I volunteered at a Salvation Army-type place and they grumbled when they'd receive a bunch of stuffed animals because they take up so much space, are priced super cheap and they don't really "move" from the shelves because people are afraid of lice, bug eggs, etc. A youth home, however, has the facilities to launder everything to their satisfaction and they definitely have people who would appreciate them.

Ask the police stations near you if they would take them. They have alot to do with kids. Like the ones who get lost, in a fire, in a car wreck, or other things as such. The ones here have stuffed animals or small dolls in their trunks. They make the kids feel better after something major happens. Or maybe the city bus lines. Kids get lost or upset and this helps there too. Thank you for thinking of others without a price attached.

There are many charities in NYC that offer assistance to children. You may be able to do a google search for non-profits in the area and then just call and ask if they need anything. You can also go to a couple of churches and see if they have any ideas. Check for a women's shelter in the area because there are probably many women with their children who've been displaced for the holidays. Also look into any family homeless shelters.

Call the Children's hospital in your city . Ask if you can donate your old stuffed animals and dolls to them.
Make sure they are well-preserved, washed and cleaned. Do NOT give them old, smelly stuffed animals and/or dolls. The hospitals do not have facilities to clean the stuffed animals and dolls you give them. They must be fresh and clean when you donate them to the hospital.
What a thoughtful idea. Good Luck.

How about a homeless shelter? Or a shelter for abused women and children? Since there are no orphanages, I suspect there aren't any in the US any more. Children who are parentless or taken from abusive or neglectful parents are placed in foster care. Call your county's Social Services Child Services Branch, they could probably find children who would like them.

Most places won't take these items because they are worried about bedbugs/roaches. I know b/c I went through a very long period trying to find a taker. If you cannot find a child/children to give to, you might consider a nursery school, selling them yourself, or finding a thrift store or consignment shop (where each sale you get some profit) that might take them. If you're really desperate and about to dump them, give them to some street peddler to sell--you'll probably find one below 23rd St. Or try craigslist.
Good luck!

There should be a Salvation Army near you. They will take that kind of stuff, although I'm not sure if they will get directly given to kids, chances r they may get put in a 2nd hand store. At least their ppl can buy stuff for their kids they normally cant afford.

talk to your local police station, fire hall, or ems station. lots of times the officers will carry stuffed animals in their cars and trucks to give to children that have been in accidents to help them not be scared and help them feel better. these stations are often overlooked when it comes to donations, and always can use the help!

Check your local crisis centers, i.e., rape, domestic assault, or homeless shelters. Churches also usually know people in need, or the Red Cross. Good for you in wanting to give back to the less fortunate.
