Are you thinking of marriage?
Why do you want to get him a ring?
Does he have a particular fondness for rings?
In the end, if the two of you truly "connect" he will understand your reasons for buying him a ring, even if you do not truly understand them yourself (or are not willing to admit to them).

Well, alot depends on how long you have been seeing each other. If it has been along time, and you each have made a commitment to each other, then maybe something like a black onyx or blue sapphire, otherwise, a bracelet or necklace, watch, nice bottle of wine and sweater, or a gift basket with goodies and a gift card.
A ring may send the wrong message and scare him off.

If it's one thing a woman should NEVER buy a man, it's a ring!

as a man i wouldn't know what to do if gf or now wife bought me a ring. i only wear wedding band and that is too much bling for me. unless he is metrosexual, buy him a great cordless drill.
