Sodium chloride is table salt. It is clear, crystalline, soluble in water, has an extremely high melting point, let alone boiling point. Crystals are cubic.
Because Sodium Chloride is not a mixture of sodium and chlorine, it is a compound of them, ie, the two elements have chemically reacted.
If you mixed sodium with chlorine the reaction would be spectacular, and rather dangerous ! A lot of heat would be given off.

each has completed an electron ring to become more stable. Na gave an electron to become Na+ , Chlorine took an electron to become Cl-. Now they are not extreemly active substances trying to be more stable. Your body needs both ions, although as elements, both are poisonous or hazardous.
